Japanese knives are among the most utilized tools in a luthier’s hands. They come in various shapes, with single-sided or double-sided bevels, and blades of different widths. Many of these knives are handcrafted by certified master knife makers. We offer only authentic, high-quality Japanese knives.

What is a Kiridashi Knife?

The Japanese Kiridashi knife is a small utility knife featuring a chisel-like edge, ideal for detailed carving and precise work. With its single bevel, which can be on either the right or left side, the Kiridashi knife is perfect for tasks that require fine control.

It is commonly used for carving, woodworking, and detailed cutting.

Which one to get, with Left or Right Bevel?

Choosing between a left or right bevel Kiridashi knife depends on your dominant hand and the direction in which you plan to work. A right bevel knife is typically used by those who are right-handed and work from right to left, while a left bevel knife is suited for left-handed individuals or those who work from left to right.

For instance, violin makers often use both left and right bevel knives when shaping the ribs of a violin. They choose the bevel depending on which side of the ribs they are working on, as the direction of the cut affects the control and precision of the work. Using the appropriate bevel for each side of the rib helps achieve the desired shape and finish.
